Jason Robert Brown’s American musical Parade, a mix of Southern antisemitism and romance, was one of the unsung musicals (unsung as in under-praised, that is) of last year. JRB’s latest in longish line of Jewish-themed shows will, it has been announced, open on Broadway in September.
Called 13, the show is about Evan Goldman, a Jewish boy whose family moves from Jewish New York to a small town in not very Jewish (hereon to be known on these pages as NVJ) Indiana. So where’s the drama in that? Well, you try being 13 and organising a barmitzvah in NVJ Indiana.
