A bit of all white: a guest room at 42 The Calls in Leeds newly vibrant district
1 min read

There is something which lifts the spirits about a special breakfast sausage menu which thoughtfully lists all the bangers that are without a trace of pork.

That's the kind of thinking which is typical of this luxury boutique hotel in Leeds' newly vibrant "The Calls" district, overlooking the River Aire.

It's the attention to detail which lifts 42 The Calls above the average.

After checking in, you're handed a reviving glass of wine as a taster from the honesty bar.

And when I booked a taxi, which five minutes after the appointed time still hadn't come, the receptionist had rung to chase it before I'd called to ask her to do just that.

The rooms are spacious - as you'd expect of a converted 18th-century corn mill. They have huge wooden beams (high enough up to be a striking feature rather than a hazard), and parts of the original mill mechanism remain in place.

The beds are handmade and spacious, with Egyptian cotton bedding. And the windows - unlike in so many modern hotels - actually open out allowing you let in some fresh air.

The bathroom robes aren't the usual thin vests designed for midgets, but gloriously thick – and generous enough fully to envelope those of us who could do with eating fewer sausages.

42 The Calls works well as an extra-comfortable business stop-off, but it would be an even better base for a more relaxed trip to explore all that Leeds now has to offer.
