Bunfight over Board election

Now the Board of Deputies election has really begun to hot up - over an invitation to coffee and cake.

Presidential contender Laura Marks has asked all deputies to a Q &A reception in a hotel on Sunday morning immediately before the Board meeting to choose its next leader

But rival Alex Brummer - who's challenging her for the post with Jonathan Arkush - believes the event out of order, adding that three Board ex-presidents have protested about it

It would, he said, "seem to be an unusual procedure on an election day and not in keeping with the democratic traditions of the Board."

Ms Marks, however, insisted that she had broken no rules, arguing that Mr Brummer had hosted a meeting with food and drinks for a group of deputies only a few weeks ago at his Daily Mail office, where he was interviewed by Jonathan Freedland.

"I am slightly surprised because he held an event himself," she said. "I have invited every single deputy and Alex and Jonny would be extremely welcome."
