Enjoying baking conditions

It was hardly nouvelle cuisine. But Leeds' Great Jewish Bake Off certainly whetted the appetites of the judges.

Based loosely on BBC's The Great British Bake Off, the 11 contestants made biscuits, hamantashen

(in honour of Purim) and, to finish, chocolate cake.

King David School pupil Daniel Sacks, 15, was "a bit shocked" to win the biscuits round. "I don't really bake much at home, if at all," he confessed. "But the idea of a bake off was really exciting."

However, the overall winner was 13-year-old Grammar School at Leeds student Gabrielle Jackson, who starred in the hamantashen round - and with her grandma's recipe for a chocolate, raspberry and cream centred confection surrounded by white and dark chocolate shards. "It really worked well and the shards were fabulous," said judge Hilary Adler.
