The Jewish Council for Racial Equality is urging community members to get involved in Refugee Week, which begins on Monday.
Jcore director Edie Friedman said the 70th anniversary of the Kindertransport, which brought young Jewish refugees to Britain, “reminds us that helping refugees is an important way of connecting with Jewish history and experience, and of putting Jewish values into practice.” During the week, Jcore is organising a twinning between the Akiva Jewish Primary in Finchley and a nearby multi-ethnic school, Manorside. Pupils will visit each other’s school and collaborate on a vision of the ideal community.
Jcore is also encouraging volunteers to collect basic necessities for destitute asylum seekers and arranging a visit to Arsenal Football Club for children, who like those on the Kindertransport, arrived in Britain alone.
