Janet Street-Porter put the case for charity to more than 200 Norwood supporters at its annual ladies' lunch, held at Kinloss, Finchley.

"There's nothing wrong with being ambitious but this cannot be at the expense of others," the author and broadcaster said. "Focusing on just yourself will never bring you true happiness."

Another speaker was Michelle, who has been assisted by the charity since being orphaned at 13. "I'm now 21 years old, have a good job with real prospects and live in my own flat.

"Norwood has helped me come such a long way. Without a doubt, Norwood's support led me to where I am today."

The £57,000 raised will go towards services for vulnerable children and their families, children with special educational needs and adults with learning disabilities.
