A fraudster who raised more than £45,000 in online donations for a bogus ovarian cancer treatment has been found guilty by a jury.
Nicole Elkabbas, 42, from Broadstairs in Kent, pleaded not guilty but was convicted of fraud and possessing criminal property at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday.
Elkabbas, a former JFS pupil, had set up a GoFundMe page to treat the illness, which she did not have. The appeal was illustrated with a photo of her lying on a hospital bed with her eyes closed.
A spokesperson for GoFundMe told the JC: "All donations were refunded last year when the misuse allegations were raised.
"Misuse counts for less than one tenth of one per cent of all activity on GoFundMe and in the very rare case there is misuse - we refund donations.
"This means there is no risk whatsoever to donors”.
Elkabbas is on bail and will be sentenced on 5 February 2021.
