Posters telling women which side of the road they should walk on have been removed after complaints to a local council.
The posters, written in Hebrew and English, appeared in the Stamford Hill area of north London, home to a large community of strictly Orthodox Jews.
They read "Women should please walk along this side of the road only".
According to reports, Shomrim, the volunteer community security group, said the posters were put up ahead of a Torah parade.
It is believed they were intended to guide Charedi men and women attending the parade in separate groups.
Hackney Council took them down after complaints from residents.
Some people criticised the signs after photos of them were posted on Twitter.
A spokesman for Hackney Shomrim said it had told the parade organisers that the posters lacked explanation in the English text and could cause offence.
A superintendent from Hackney police said the organisers had agreed to display Hebrew-only posters next year, and remove them more quickly after the event.
