American Jews reacted with a mixture of bemusement and disgust when footage emerged last weekend of Donald Trump wearing a tallit.
It emerged that the Republican presidential candidate had been given the garment to wear during a trip to a Detroit church service run by Great Faith Ministries.
Mr Trump hoped that the visit would help him drum up support from black voters.
Bishop Wayne Jackson draped the tallit on Mr Trump, saying "this is a prayer shawl straight from Israel", sparking a round of applause.
Black churches in the US tend to emphasise the importance of the Old Testament, leading some to adopt the shawl as a ceremonial garment.
On Tuesday, Mr Trump turned his attention back to America's Jewish voters, saying that the nuclear deal with Iran would destroy Israel if he is not elected.
