Being a Fresher is never easy, so we asked seasoned students and recent graduates to offer their top tips.

Jonny Singer, 21, studied history at Cambridge.

He said: “Don’t sign up for a mailing list and then say: ‘Oh, I’ll go in a few weeks’. The longer you leave it, the more intimidating it will look as groups form. Go to the first, second and third meetings/sessions and you’ll quickly be considered an important member of the team.”

Hannah Pupkewitz, 22, has just graduated from Nottingham where she studied English and history.

She said: “Whether it’s JSoc, a hall night out or a society meet-up, there are lots of themed parties and events, so bring lots of fancy dress costumes. Wings, cat ears, a leopard onesie, a tie, face paints, glitter, a suit, maybe even a morph suit!”

Brett Bernstein, 21, studies clinical medicine at University College London.

He said: “Visit friends from home at their JSocs. It’s chance to meet loads of Jews from all over and to show off your own JSoc when they return the favour.”
