While two titles from the Jane Green production line — The Beach House (hardback) and Second Chance (paperback) —sit in the bestseller charts, an intriguing battle for supremacy is being fought at the top of the fiction hardback list at Joseph’s Bookstore in North London between Illuminations, by Eva Hoffman, and Journey to Nowhere, by another Eva, the mother of the Figes writing clan.
JC critics saw the books in contrasting lights. Geoffrey Alderman complained that Figes’s book was “simply a peg on which to hang a rant about Israel and the USA”. David Herman looked more favourably upon Hoffman’s novel, though he did warn that it is a “dark book”. At the moment, the Evas are even in the sales charts.
