Board urges community to ‘adopt’ one of remaining hostages

The Board of Deputies is urging communal organisations to “adopt” one of the 53 hostages who remain in Gaza.

In 2024, the Board launched the Adopt a Hostage scheme, and hundreds of communities around the country “adopted” one of those who were taken captive on October 7, with the aim of publicising their plight and supporting their families.

More than 600 days later, over 50 hostages are still in in Gaza, with around 20 of them believed to be alive.

The Board of Deputies, which is the cross-communal representative body of the British Jewish community, said they were calling on all synagogues and Jewish organisations “to ensure that they tell the stories of the captives”.

Board of Deputies president Phil Rosenberg said: “The hostages are constantly in our thoughts. For more than a year, we have been holding weekly vigils at Westminster whenever Parliament is sitting and led national campaigns around Pesach, Chanukah and Succot. We need help to bring their individual stories into the national consciousness and that’s where communities can help. Let’s do everything in our power to assist their families and to bring the hostages back home.”
