A fundraising drive to repair the roof at Liverpool’s Old Hebrew Congregation has got off to a flying start.
As a condition of a £160,000 English Heritage grant in the spring, members of the Grade I listed Victorian synagogue had to raise a further £20,000.
Synagogue project director Alaster Burman then came up with the idea of bringing in the money by the sale of 2,000 slates at £10 apiece.
In just a month, 435 slates have been sold and Mr Burman said it was “a source of pride to our members that so many Jewish and non-Jewish people from within Liverpool and further afield have supported us.
“This will help maintain this precious and beautiful building and the work we do for our community and indeed for the wider community,” he added.
Donors’ names will be recorded in a leather-bound book to be displayed in the foyer of the Princes Road synagogue, alongside the original donors’ list for the 1874 building.
