Konskie, a small town in central Poland — it could have been many others — went from being a hub of Jewish life with kosher shops, schools and shuls to a place where there were not even Jewish memories: there are no Jews to remember anything. For 72 years Catholic locals failed to commemorate the extermination of more than half of their town’s community. And when they did, just one Jew was invited. Still, the fact that the event took place at all, in a country where there are many other lost killing fields — is something.
