Neo-Nazi surge

On Sunday, in the heart of Europe, one in five Hungarian votes were cast for a neo-Nazi party. The near-total collapse of the BNP has insulated us from the surge in support for the extreme right across mainland Europe. But the rise of Marine Le Pen — who may well top the French polls in next month’s Euro elections — and other extremists is not going away. The thought that a fifth of Hungarian voters support a neo-Nazi party is so disturbing that the natural reaction is to pretend that it doesn’t really matter. But it does — not least in the European Parliament, which could conceivably end up with fascists in charge. These are very worrying times.
