It is deeply disturbing that Nigel Farage appears to be rushing to embrace and ally with Beppe Grillo’s Five Star Movement (5SM). Mr Farage has so far wisely kept well away from the likes of Marine Le Pen. But the leader of the Front National at least attempts to portray her party as free from antisemitism. Grillo, on the other hand, regularly uses antisemitic tropes in his campaigning. Should Ukip choose to ally with 5SM then it will, at a stroke, destroy any claims it has to be different from the others. “Ukip, ally of antisemites”. Is that really how it wants to be known?
