A sporting rarity

It is rare for the JC to be able to hail the role of a Jewish sportsman in one of the definitive sporting achievements of our time. But Steven Reingold’s net bowling to Ben Stokes prior to his innings of 258 was a major contribution. Perhaps now is the time to reveal some previously hidden examples. The tailor who sewed the elastic band on Pele’s trousers; the accountant who checked how many clubs were in Jack Nicklaus’s golf bag; the doctor who put a plaster on Lasse Viren’s arm after his transfusion. And, of course, the Blooms waiter who served Mohammed Ali before his fight with Joe Frazier.
